In fact, in 2010 alone 1.24 million people were killed on roadways around the world. In almost every country, roadways are shared by large buses, small compact cars, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, pedestrians, and other travelers. Some countries have more developed roadway laws than others, and in some countries the roads are better maintained than in other countries.

Throughout the world, each day an estimated 3,400 people fie in road traffic crashes. These crashes involve buses, motorcycles, cars, trucks, bicycles, and pedestrians. Half of the people that are killed in crashes globally are pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists. This is because in many countries, these are common modes of transportation that are even more frequent than driving cars. In some countries, bicyclists share the roadways with large buses, or pedestrians have the ability to dash out into a busy roadway without a crosswalk.
