One Dead, One Injured in Alleged Drunk Driving Accident

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving resulting in a fatal injury wreck. The accident happened on a recent afternoon after authorities had received numerous calls about a reckless driving incident. Complaints also stated that there may be some sort of argument or domestic dispute occurring within the vehicle. Officers began looking for the described vehicle on or near the I-5 in the Westley area. A California Highway Patrol officer spotted a vehicle heading north on the Interstate which matched the description. He got behind the car, turned on his emergency lights and siren and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over, the vehicle sped away. The officer pursued the car which took the next exit and crashed into a pickup truck stopped at the end of the off-ramp. The car remained operational after the rear-end collision and the driver sped away from the scene. The vehicle crossed the surface street and then immediately got back on the I-5. The driver soon lost control of the car which went off the highway and flipped over. The passenger side and roof were crushed in the wreck and a female in the front passenger seat received fatal injuries. The 24-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger in the back of the car suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The driver and passenger in the pickup truck that had been previously struck were uninjured. D.H., the driver of the vehicle which fled officers, was not injured and was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. He has been charged with DUI causing injury or death as well as other charges related to the incident.
