4 Killed, 5 Injured in Severe Rollover Crash

An accident involving a pickup truck and a sedan resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries recently. Witnesses reported seeing a truck carrying several kids in the bed of the truck going well over the speed limit and being closely followed by a sedan. Shortly after passing the witness' vehicle he said he saw smoke and other cars coming to a stop. The driver of the pickup had apparently lost control of his vehicle and it flipped over multiple times before coming to a rest upside down on the road side. The truck caught fire several minutes after the wreck and nearby motorists rushed to ensure no one was near the burning vehicle. There were nine occupants in the truck—about five or six riding in the truck bed—and all were ejected during the rollover.

The occupants ranged in age from 13 to 21. They had been on their way to enjoy a swim at a nearby lake on that hot summer afternoon and were wearing swim suits. A 13-year-old girl that had been in the cab of the truck and a 21-year-old male that had been in the cargo bed were pronounced dead at the scene. Seven others were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, two were in critical condition. The 19-year-old driver of the pickup and an 18-year-old that had been in the back died at the hospital. The exact condition of the other injured passengers was not described. While Alabama is one of 19 states in the U.S. that allows passengers to ride in the bed of a truck without restraints, children 14 and younger are required to wear a seatbelt in the cab of a vehicle. No one in the cab of the truck was wearing a seatbelt. If you were hurt in a car accident caused by someone else's recklessness then you should speak with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
