Drunk Driving Facts in Minnesota

The Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety reported in August 2012 that drunk driving accounts for approximately one third of all traffic accident fatalities in the state every year. During the last five years in Minnesota, 651 individuals lost their lives in drunk driving accidents. In 2011, 111 people died in these impaired-driving crashes. Another 2,375 people were injured due to drunk or drug-impaired drivers. That year, 29,257 drivers were arrested on DWI charges in the state, which works out to an average of 81 drivers every day. Of those arrested, 76 percent were convicted. More than 12,000 of these drivers had previous convictions, which amounts to 41 percent. Close to 2,000 of these DWIs involved drivers under the age of 21 (7 percent). One in every seven drivers licensed in the state has at least one DWI conviction.

Information gathered from various agencies, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the American Medical Association and others indicate that with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) as low as .02 percent, a driver will experience some loss of judgment, a decrease in the ability to perform two or more tasks, and a declining ability to visually track a moving target. As BAC increases, the predictable negative effects increase. A BAC of .08 percent, which is the legal limit, reduces muscle coordination, judgment, and reasoning, impairs perception and concentration, and reduces one's ability to process information. Clearly, the effects of drugs and alcohol pose a dangerous hazard to drivers, their passengers, and all others on the road.

Unfortunately, traffic accidents comprise a large percentage of person injury and wrongful death claims in Minnesota as well as the rest of the country. These accidents involve cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, bicycles, and pedestrians and result in thousands of injuries and deaths. The economic as well as emotional toll is huge; for victims of traffic accidents, their lives may be changed forever. Because of this, laws were enacted to provide such victims with legal recourse in which they may recover compensation for their losses and damages.
