Witnesses Say Mother Pleaded With Crowd To Help Save Daughter

After two cars collided on the highway, one of them burst into flame, trapping a 2-year old girl inside, where she died before she could be rescued by emergency responders.

In a gruesome car accident on the 110 Freeway in Highland Park on Friday, August 26th, members of the California Highway Patrol attempted to rescue the two-year old daughter of one of the drivers involved in the collision. Details released by the CHP indicate that the incident began when a GMC Yukon SUV collided violently with a Nissan Altima that evening, at what troopers approximate to be 5:30 p.m. Both vehicles are believed to have been driving southbound on the freeway, when they approached a curved section that is notorious as a site of frequent accidents.

As they neared the scene of the collision, just north of an intersection with York Boulevard, the cars smashed into each other at high speed, careening off each other and ending up jammed together in the middle of the three-lane highway. Debris blocked other vehicles from passing, causing a traffic jam in the middle of rush hour.

Hospital Takes In Standers-By Burned During Attempted Rescue

The carrying the mother and her daughter then burst into flame, preventing the driver from pulling her infant child out of the back seat.

A 26-year old student who lives across from the crash site watched in horror as the baby girl screamed for help. He told CHP officers that he and several others tried to douse the flames with a hose, and then attempted to reach inside the wreckage and pull the girl out, sustaining several burns for their efforts. By the time emergency responders arrived and put out the fires, however, it was too late.

According to authorities, four people were eventually taken to a nearby hospital, including two witnesses who had tried to rescue the child.
