Fatal Teen Car Accident Statistics in Light of the Many Recent Tragedies

If you have watched on television or read the online news, you likely are very aware of the many deadly car accidents that have occurred over the recent years. However, what is so shocking is that this weekend alone there have been a disturbing amount of fatal teen car accidents in the U.S. On Friday and two on Saturday in different locations around the country, teenagers died in horrific car accidents. Three teenagers lost their life on Friday when two pickup trucks collided after running a four way stop. On Saturday, another two accidents occurred claiming the life of far too many young people.

In Texas, one teen had just dropped off his girlfriend at her home and then went to drive away with his remaining carful of friends on their spring break trip. Sadly, none of these kids had the chance to experience their spring break, he driver of the car ran a stop sign and crashed into a fully loaded oil tanker that was crossing the intersection. The driver and four passengers were killed in the collision. In Ohio, another 6 teenagers out of 8 total passengers were killed after the 19 year old driver lost control of the vehicle while speeding. She did not have a license, nor did the car belong her or any of the passengers. Once she lost control, the car collided with the guard rail on the side of the highway causing the car to flip over the ledge, landing upside-down in the swamp. The first four victims died in the car from drowning, the other two died while being treated at the hospital from cardiac arrest. Two 14 year old boys survived, and ran a quarter mile down the road to call for help. Sadly, responders were unable to save any of their teenage friends.

With so many teenage fatalities, this is a reminder to parents that educating our young ones about road safety is absolutely crucial. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, over the past ten years teenage car accident fatalities are actually at a decline. Though unfortunately, even with this statistic it also shows that teenage driver fatalities are actually on a frightening incline. In the year 2000 there were reported 435 16 year old drivers that were killed in motor vehicle accidents, and in 2011 that number dropped all the way to 173. The rate also dropped significantly for 17 year old drivers from 545 during that same time period to 250.

Unfortunately, that same age of drivers has drastically increased in just the last year. Within he first half of 2012, there was a 19% increase from 202 in 2011 up to 250 last year. However, there is one reason for this statistic decreasing is because there are actually fewer teenagers who are receiving their licenses at the age of 16 now. What is interesting is that studies believe it has to do with the usage of internet, and now that the common person has access to internet whenever they would want, the need to visit in person has lessened.

According to reports, all the reports accident of the weekend are not believed to be a result of drunk driving, though reckless driving is still a vital factor for investigators to take into account. Whatever the case of the car accident might be, people were killed and injured as a result. In the event that you or someone you know has been injured or killed in a car accident consider contacting a trusted car accident attorney in your area for legal representation.
