Florida Traffic Crash Facts

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FDHSMV) reported more than 235,000 traffic accidents on the state's roads and highways in 2010. This translates to an average of 645 accidents every day. Close to 2,500 people died in these accidents. Another 195,104 people were injured. 499 pedestrians were killed while 7,290 were injured. 350 motorcyclists died as a result of traffic accidents while 6,686 were injured. 76 bicycle riders were killed while another 4,600 were injured. 80 teen drivers were killed in accidents that year while another 60 of their passengers died. More than 10,000 teen drivers were injured along with close to 8,000 of their passengers.

The majority of these accidents were caused by careless driving. The FDHSMV also states this as "operated motor vehicle in a careless or negligent manner." This careless driving accounted for 23 percent of all the fatal accidents, 52 percent of all the injuries, and 53 percent of all the accidents which caused property damage only.

Careless driving can consist of a variety of behaviors, from driving while under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs to texting while driving, eating, drinking, grooming, or dealing with mechanical devices while driving, driving while fatigued, following too closely, speeding, and failing to yield the right-of-way. In its simplest form, it can merely be driver inattention. Inadequate attention in such a risky action as driving a 3,000 pound vehicle at any speed in random traffic can only be called dangerous. Any type of careless or negligent driving can cause the driver to be viewed as the cause of the accident, making him or her legally liable for damages to victims.
