When a pregnant woman is injured in a car accident, both the mother and the child may be affected.
Anyone, including infants and pregnant women, can get injured in an accident, and when a pregnant women gets injured, it can affect both the mother and the child. An unborn fetus injured from a car accident may be born with cognitive and physical disabilities. There are a number of complications that an unborn baby can face after a car accident. It is also possible that the mother may suffer severe injuries, but the baby remains unharmed.
Placental Abruption
The placenta is attached to the uterine wall and acts as a carrier of nutrients for the baby. However, a serious trauma such as a car crash can cause the placenta to separate from the uterus. The common signs and symptoms of placental abruption include pain, vaginal bleeding, and labor-like symptoms. Placental abruption requires immediate medical intervention.
Premature Labor and Birth
The physical trauma and stress caused by a car accident can cause premature birth. Premature birth itself can lead to a variety of complications such as respiratory problems, infection, hemorrhage, underdeveloped digestive system and lungs, sepsis, blindness, anemia, heart problems, infection, jaundice, and pneumonia.
Miscarriage
In some rare cases, car accidents can also lead to a miscarriage. Although babies are protected by amniotic fluid, a miscarriage can occur if the mother is not wearing a proper seatbelt. Miscarriage can also happen if the mother gets severely injured in the crash.
In the United States, around 2.5 percent of pregnant women get involved in some type of car crash during their pregnancy. It is important for pregnant women to understand the risks associated with car accidents and to seek immediate medical care in case they get involved in an accident. Seeing a doctor is important even if there are no visible injuries or major symptoms.
