BMW Recalling Vehicles to Fix Cables

When you buy a car, you want to make sure that it is a sound and safe vehicle that you can rely on when you are out on the road. BMW is currently conducting a safety recall because they have discovered that 505,000 vehicles in the United States have faulty battery connector cables that can cause the engine to stall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are at least 505,000 vehicles that are going to be affected by the recall in the United States and at least 65,000 vehicles in Canada. Documents from BMW show that there are a variety of different models from different manufacturing dates that have been a part of the recall.

Among the many cars that have been recalled are the 2008 through 2012 BMW 1-Series couples and convertibles. As well, the 2007-2011 BMW 3-Series sedans, couples and convertibles have been recalled, and the 2007-2011 BMW 3-Serioes sports wagons which were built from March 2007 through June 2011. There are at least 7,300 of these vehicles that will need to go back into the shops for repairs. As well, there are over 10,000 2009 through 2011 BMW Z4 Roadsters that need to be taken back into the shop. In all of the cars there is a similar problem.

According to reports in The Car Connection, the batter cable in the cars connects to a fuse box that degrades the more that the car is in use. In the end, this can cause the engine to fail to start and the car can experience a momentary engine shutdown while in motion. This can facilitate a serious accident. As well, the cars can often stall during operation, which can be a potentially dangerous situation, especially if the car stalls on a busy or dark road.

BMW became aware of their manufacturing mistake as a result of two field reports involving 3-Series vehicles that did not start. Later on, the car company started receiving more reports of similar issues with other BMWs. The company started to analyze the situation and issued a bulletin to dealers describing the discovery. In March of 2012, a Canadian car company submitted a complaint to BMW for the alleged loss of electrical power and an engine stall regarding some of their BMW cars. After this, more complaints started rolling in and the BMW Company chose to investigate the situation in debt and analyze the matter. In Canada, the stalled engine facilitated one serious accident, but thankfully the company has not received any reports of injuries from the cars.

As a result of the incident, BMW will now notify owners and dealers and replace the positive battery cable connecter with a better version which will not wear out with use. The car company also plans to secure the fuse box in the car using a non-vibrator method so that this will keep the box from wearing the connector with the batter cable. The service work on all recalled cars will be provided free of charge, so make sure to contact the firm today if you want more information about this.

The BMW safety recall campaign is expected to being during March 2013 and the owners of the cars will be personally contacted and instructed to bring their cars in for maintenance work.
