Iowa Storm Brings Over 270 Crashes

Iowa residents are no strangers to winter storms, and a recent weekend snowstorm brought over 270 car accidents. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, between Jan. 31 and Feb. 03, troopers responded to nearly 900 calls to assist motorists and 273 crashes, according to a news release.

Once the snow began to fall, no parking was allowed on most streets; snow plows needed empty streets to take care of the heavy snow. Police said that they issued 550 tickets on residential streets, and another 289 tickets along snow routes.

Safe Winter Driving Tips

If you live in Iowa, or in another area that experiences heavy snowfall, you are encouraged to read over these winter driving tips. Black ice, dense fog, and heavy snow can all affect your ability to drive safely, and driving in dangerous snowstorms can place you and your passengers at grave risk.

  • Check the road and weather conditions before heading out the door.
  • Always maintain a safe following distance between you and the vehicle in front.
  • Maintain a safe speed for the weather conditions.
  • Drive with your lights on, and keep head and tail lights clear of snow.
  • If there are "white out" conditions, don't drive.
  • Make sure you have good windshield wipers.
  • Always keep plenty of fuel in your gas tank.
  • Don't pass a snowplow if the visibility is poor.
  • Before winter arrives, make sure your tires are in good condition.

Be sure to pack a winter survival kit inside your vehicle in case your car breaks down or you are stranded. Such a kit should include: jumper cables, blankets, matches, water, a snow shovel, an ice scraper, nonperishable food items, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, and sand or carpet strips for extra traction.

Don't forget to remember that winter storms result in longer stopping distances and reduced visibility; if you do have to drive someplace in poor weather, be sure to follow the above safety tips!
