GM Faces Consolidated Lawsuits in New York Court

The auto manufacturer, GM is facing a large number of lawsuits related to injuries and financial damages due to an ignition switch recall. Reuters reports that some angry GM customers sued the manufacturer claiming that their vehicles lost value due to the recall.

As many as 80 lawsuits were filed, and GM requested a consolidation to make the cases easier to handle. The auto company says that they wanted to move all claims to the same district in New York so that they could be more efficient. More than 80 cases that were consolidated in the New York federal courts deal with alleged economic injuries, not physical injuries that were related to an ignition switch defect on various vehicles. Most plaintiffs say that they were not physically injured by their vehicles, but they want compensation because of the value lost as a result of the recall.

ABC News reports the GM has recalled millions of vehicles for an ignition switch problem. This year alone, ABC reports that the company has had to recall about 20 million cars for these errors. The company says that the ignition switch can move out of the run position if the key is carrying extra weight (such as a key ring) which can cause the car to stop in transit. Also, if the car experiences a jarring event, such as rolling over a pothole, this can result in the key error.

The company says that the use of a key with a hole instead of a slotted key will fix the problem. At present, drivers in the recalled GM vehicles are at risk to a serious accident if their car slips out of the run position on a busy highway or road. Call a local car accident attorney today if you believe that you have been injured in a car accident due to this GM defect and want to seek compensation from the automobile manufacturer.
