The Deadliest Cities for Pedestrian Accidents

A new study has pinpointed the 10 most dangerous cities for pedestrians in the nation. The National Complete Streets Coalition says that the study compared the total pedestrian deaths with annual pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents in many major cities. They were able to decipher the 10 most dangerous metropolitan areas to walk in America.

According to the study, Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida ranked at number one, followed by Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida at number two. Jacksonville, Florida was the third most dangerous place for pedestrians and Miami, Fort-Lauderdale and Pompano Beach Florida ranked as the fourth most dangerous place. This makes Florida the most deadly state for pedestrian accidents by far, with so many of its cities listed in the top five most dangerous areas.

Following Florida's list of cities, Memphis was considered the fifth most dangerous place for pedestrians. After this the coalition listed Birmingham, Alabama, Houston, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, Phoenix, Arizona and Charlotte, North Carolina. Most of these cities are in the South, a coincidence that the coalition plans to study in more depth in the future.

The NCSC also studied large metro areas and pedestrian deaths, and discovered that there is significant danger in these top 5 cities:

  • New York City, New York
  • Los Angeles, California
  • San Francisco, California
  • San Jose, California
  • Miami, Florida

If you want to avoid serious injuries from pedestrian accidents, you need to take particular precautions. First of all, it is important to remain alert. Distracted walkers that are on their phone may trip, cross the street on a red light, or make other mistakes that facilitate their accident. Drivers also need to be alert, as looking at a phone or fiddling with the radio may cause them to make a serious mistake.

Also, pedestrians should never jaywalk, even when the road seems clear. Many pedestrian accidents happen when jaywalker is hit by a distracted driver. Pedestrians should do their best to stay on the sidewalk as well so that they will not suffer serious accidents if cars drift over to the side of the road.

Ultimately, the goal of pedestrian safety is more than just awareness, it is an effort. As a pedestrian, you have the right to hold a distracted or careless driver accountable.
